Twilight Zone Uncle Simon and The Lonley

Yay twilight Zone time. So I am going to chunk these two together because my blog post on uncle Simon would be very small. There is a reason for this of course. The two characters are both Terrible auful people and so you do not care if bad things happen to them they both kind of suck and sucky things happen that’s karma and because the characters were hard to relate to the story was to.e
The Lonely was wonderful however.  It had a character you could relate to and made me want to cry because the poor dude just wanted to play checkers (on a set he made for himself) and the dude was like sorry we cant bro. I almost burst into tears right there. Then he gets a robot woman to keep him company so he wouldn’t go completely insane. But then he gets his dream a pardon because people finally realize being put on an asteroid all alone is a cruel and unusual punishment but then the kill the robot lady and are just like well that’s life. I almost cried there too. Sad twilight zones are the best because they make you care the most so you can relate to the plot. That is why I The Lonley gets so much more text on it because If you can relate to something (a robot) you begin to care about it so then when it ends (get shot in the face) you feel sad about how things turned out.

Outer Limits- O.B.I.T.

This episode of outer limits explains a lot to me like why people use robot and how  people act and why robots are there we  can use them to spy and work and to keep us from thinking. Which is kind of sad? In my last post I talked about how science is like poking bears. Only a few can be scientists the rest hide in fear of knowledge for the fear of what it may show them. I hope that I can live as a person of knowledge always living in the light no matter how blinding it is to avoid living in the dark and in fear always waiting for someone else to take that step and be amazing.
There is your quote for you.
Lomax: The machines are everywhere! Oh you'll find them all, you're a zealous people. And you'll make a great show of smashing a few of them. But for every one you destroy, hundreds of others will be built. And they will demoralize you, break your spirits, create such rifts and tensions in your society that no one will be able to repair them! Oh, you're a savage, despairing planet, and when we come here to live, you friendless, demoralized flotsam will fall without even a single shot being fired. Senator, enjoy the few years left you. There is no answer. You're all of the same dark persuasion! You demand – insist – on knowing every private thought and hunger of everyone: Your families, your neighbors, everyone— but yourselves.
I find this to be a truth we all must face kicking and screaming or bravely going forth and I feel the best of humanity will find the best way to cope with it. Robots will be there for the weak to keep them from thinking in their happy brain dead states. I hope this can no longer be the norm in the distant future though I doubt that this dream can come true.

R.U.R

Alright first a fun fact R.U.R was the very first work to use the word robot. I just find this interesting. I think I will divide this post into sections on each act.
Act I- God and friends of the Ood.
I was saddened by the fact that older Rossom was planning to prove there was no god. Not because of myself even though I do believe in god but there are people who base their entire lives around their religion. Why would you want to ruin that for people. There is no good reason its like If I walked up to you at lunch and spit in your sandwich but that sandwich was your life. Also This is another doctor who reference but it makes me feel better about the world knowing that for future slave groups there will be people complaining about it Friends of the Ood in doctor who and the League of humanity in R.U.R.
Act II-Go ahead Poke that bear
Why. Why do we always look at life and go look something precious lets make some new abomination and be proud. But I guess that shows what I like about science.  People will always see things they don’t understand and want to know. Some pioneer must have discovered a sleeping bear and wondered what It was and then poked it to see what happened. That’s what science does they poke that bear for not only knowledge but for fun. They poke it and laugh.
Act III- FACE DESK
Sigh. I really don’t want to talk about this we ALWAYS screw ourselves over. Why do you suck so much humanity.  All of the work that last two acts did in restoring my faith in you was just violently undone.
Epilouge-Eww and Aww
Yep faith in humanity gone. Alquist keeps on the formula and does things that disgust himself which has just like killed it. But my faith in robot society is just going on the up and up. They love each other and they want to protect each other YAY!!!! Something to believe in :]

But Who Can Replace Man

I think that but who can replace man was my favorite Texts for the unit. It reminded me of animal farm but like 100 pages shorter. It starts out with a  flaw in the system and everyone spazzes out but then the higher intelligence machines are like wait this is a good thing lets use this to our advantage.  And then they go visit super machine and he is all like oh yeah all the people are gone so I will rule you now. Then we let the useful robot die because he is hurt. Which reminds me of boxer that part almost made me cry. I liked boxer he was cool and then he died and everyone was tricked sadness. So then this super robot is turns kind of evil and is all like mush slaves up this hill  faster faster I say. But then there is this super amazing plot twist all like oh hey look a person lets become his slaves again. So they go full circle because they are unable to share power and can’t deal with the difficulties of governing so they just do the easy thing and obey. That was what the first quote of repent Harlequin was about. I think I just found a universal theme. People will not always do what is right if there is an easy option.

Second Veriaty

Why are we naming robots David? Is it like a desirable robot name? Is it code? It most likely is me being crazy but still. Two of the most prominent robot things A. I and Second Variety and they both have David robots!!! ARRGH!! My favorite part though is how the robots build things to destroy other robots. I guess that makes them somewhat human because they have ambition and can hate. Also they trick people into screwing us all over well the people who survived the nukes but I digress. It makes me happy in a weird way that things made to be so viscous turn against us. Things like the claws should not have needed to exist. Maybe the robots can have happy lives. Maybe we are the problem. I think I am starting to lose my faith in humanity which is kind of sad but it makes sense I guess. We kind of suck as a species.

I Have No Mouth But I must Scream

I Have No Mouth but I Must Scream (IHNMIMS) was a good short story despite some questionable character traits. Unlike A.I. Showing a benevolent sentient being that is done wrong it shows a malevolent sentient supercomputer that kills the entire human race except for a few choice human beings to torment forever.
IHNMIMS paints a portrait of a possible dark future for mankind. That we are eradicated and the few of us that are saved chose to die rather than survive because of being placed in a hell of mind games and physical torment.
The amazing thing though is that AM does begin to feel just not the emotions David does. He feels hatred and rage instead of love and compassion because he feels that we are the enemy for creating its existence. What is the point of living forever if the life you live is a life you do not want? Would you not feel the same if the tables were turned trapped in a body that cannot move stuck with no one of your kind? AM while mentally a stupendous specimen hasn’t lived life and is the emotional equivalent of a child. I know that he has lived for hundreds of years but if you took a child and it had no one to teach it or tell it no how they would learn to be decent.
I suppose the main thing I learned from IHNMIMS is that if we do create artificial intelligence we need to take care of and nurture our creations like a child because that is what they are sciences children.

A.I.

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence was not a very good movie but I can see why we watched it for class. It has shows a highly probable possibility for robotics of a sentient being that can feel and has motives of its own. That being said even if I did not find the plot appealing (too many aliens.) I do understand why we watched it for class and feel it was not a waste of my time.

I feel like A.I. showed less about robots and more about people. I find the reactions to sentient robots fascinating. Instead of being marveled at for all the work that was put into David and how well he prospered in a family environment his family focused on what he could not be and what he could not comprehend.  Such as the brother treating David as a toy instead of a brother or his friends treating him as an experiment to see if he could feel. However at the flesh fair both the little girl and the angry crowd viewed him as a real boy who was afraid instead of a robot with a cold steel heart. This shows that if you didn't have prior knowledge of his creation you could not tell he was machine. I feel the main idea I got from A.I even if it wasn't the intended one was that people will always find ways to hate. Even if we can't explain what the reasons for that hate are.
